Western Farmers Vote for Choice
March 28, 2007
Western barley growers have given Canada’s New Government a strong mandate to proceed with market choice by removing the Canadian Wheat Board monopoly on barley sales.
Agriculture Minister Chuck Strahl today announced the results of the barley vote, which showed 62.2% of barley growers want market choice. Only 37.8% voted to maintain the Canadian Wheat Board monopoly. Canada’s New Government has consulted with farmers and will move forward by establishing market choice for barley growers. During the last election, Conservatives promised to give Western grain farmers the freedom to make their own marketing decisions. Since grain farmers take all the risks and make all the investments, they deserve the chance to seek out the best possible return that makes good business sense to them – whether selling to the Canadian Wheat Board or outside of it. The plebiscite is another step in honouring our commitment to provide market choice, while continuing to preserve a strong, yet voluntary Canadian Wheat Board. By giving a voice to Western farmers, Canada’s New Government is helping build a stronger, safer, better Canada. -- Full Results: “The Canadian Wheat Board should retain the single desk for the marketing of barley into domestic human consumption and export markets.” 37.8% “I would like the option to market my barley to the Canadian Wheat Board or any other domestic or foreign buyer.” 48.4% “The Canadian Wheat Board should not have a role in the marketing of barley.” 13.8% Total votes cast: 29067 |
