About Art
Born in Three Hills, Alberta, on February 19, 1943, Art Hanger studied engineering at the University of Calgary before he became a police officer in 1971. Prior to his election as a Member of Parliament, Art proudly served the citizens of Calgary as a member of the Calgary Police Force for 22 years, where he retired with distinction as a Detective in the areas of Major and Commercial crime.
Art was first elected to the House of Commons in 1993 to represent the citizens who live in the riding of Calgary Northeast. He has been subsequently re-elected by the citizens of Calgary Northeast in 1997, 2000, 2004 and 2006. Today as a member of the Conservative Government, he is pleased to serve as Chair of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights, in addition to his duties as a Member of Parliament for Calgary Northeast. In Parliament, Art has been a tough and outspoken advocate for policies to reduce violent crime and sexual exploitation. From 1993 to 2006, Art served as a member of the Official Opposition, and took on a number of important critic portfolios: National Defence, Solicitor General and Citizenship and Immigration. He also served on a number of House of Commons Standing and Sub-Committees, including: Citizenship and Immigration; the Sub-Committee on Solicitation Laws; Standing Joint Committee on Scrutiny of Regulations; Access to Information, Privacy and Ethics; Sub-committee on National Security; Justice and Legal Affairs; and National Defence. Mr. Hanger is actively involved with the Canadian NATO Parliamentary Association, where he serves as a Counsellor on the Executive Committee. He is also a member of the Canada-United States Inter-Parliamentary Group and the Canada-Australia-New Zealand Friendship Group. Art is a recipient of the Governor General’s Police Exemplary Service Medal, in recognition of 20 years of loyal meritorious service to law enforcement in Canada. He is also a recipient of the Commemorative Medal for the 125th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada, in recognition of significant contribution to compatriots, community and to Canada. In 2005, Art was awarded the Alberta Centennial Medal in recognition of his accomplishments and contributions to the Province of Alberta. His community activities include serving as President and Sports Director of the Marlborough Community Association. He is a Founding Director of the Canadian Justice Foundation, and is an active member of Bethlehem Evangelical Lutheran Church. Art Hanger is married to Margaret. Together they have three grown children. |
